A colonial town founded in 1605, Laranjeiras was one of the centres of sugar cane and cotton production and played a decisive role in the economy of the region until the 19th century. Since then, the city has gradually fallen asleep. From this period, however, there remain beautiful churches such as the Igreja Nossa Senhora do Bomfim, built in 1836 on a hill, and some industrial remains, such as the Trapiche warehouse (or Centro de Tradições), through which cotton was transported. This warehouse now houses the tourist office. You can spend a pleasant half-day in its paved streets lined with beautiful colonial houses
