For most of the colonial period, Alagoas belongs to the Harbour of Pernambuco and suffers the same vicissitudes as it. It separated in 1817 to become a self-employed person and a province. In 1839, Maceió replaced Marechal Deodoro as a provincial capital. Today, the colonial culture remains very present. Agriculture is predominant and widespread clientelism. For evidence, Alagoas is the stronghold of the old and ephemeral President of the Republic, Fernando Collor de Mello, out of power because of corruption.Alagoas covers an area of nearly 28 000 km ², a little less than Belgium. In 2006, the State had a population of 2,9 million, or less than 1,6% per cent of the population of Brazil. The economy is rather poor and rudimentary. With a P.I.B. equivalent to less than 1% of Brazilian production, Alagoas is, however, the largest sugar cane producer in northeastern Brazil and the second in Brazil after São Paulo, which it depends almost exclusively. The State's social indicators are among the worst in Brazil and a recent survey estimated that seven of Brazil's ten poorest municipalities were located in Alagoas. Along with so many bad figures, will a glow announce the end of the tunnel?Tourism is developing and growing rapidly. The state is almost untouched. These are all landscapes of dreams and paradise beaches to discover if you take the time to do it. Some compare the region in the Caribbean, so it's pretty. The local gastronomy with seafood is greatly appreciated, like the typical dish, sururu. A Marechal Deodoro can admire a colonial architectural set of interest. The northern part of the coastline and the more appreciated beaches are also close to Recife, capital of Pernambuco, than Maceió and you can leave from these two cities just for the day to know these places of dream.
