Lake Magadi contains water with a high salt content and a temperature of over 40°C. Although inhospitable, thousands of lesser flamingos come to feed on the micro-algae and small crustaceans that proliferate in the waters of the lake. Because it is so shallow, much of it is covered with a thick crust of soda crystals. These crystals, considered the purest in the world, have been mined for over a century by Kenya's oldest mining operation, the Magadi Soda Company. Magadi has thus become a "company town" that lives and exists solely around soda ash production. The traveler who ventures into these regions will nevertheless be surprised to discover a sumptuous and timeless region around and up to Lake Natron
