ABBAYE DE MAREDRET
Abbey on the heights of the village of Maredret, housing a monastery of Benedictine nuns open to visits
In the shadow of its almost eponymous neighbour, the Abbey of St John and Scholastica has been home to a monastery of Benedictine nuns since the late 19th century. On the heights of the village of Maredret, the community housed in the neo-gothic building surrounded by walls lives discreetly. As a sign of the times, the nuns are now open to visitors (groups by appointment) and the small shop displays their handicrafts (candles, rosaries, knitting, ceramics, jams, etc.) and illuminations which are renowned beyond the region. Recently, two beers have been sold in supermarkets.
