CHAPELLE DES PENITENTS
This chapel houses a magnificent altarpiece attributed to Pierre Vaneau, from the Sainte-Marie convent in Le Puy.
Built in 1681, enlarged in 1723 but destroyed by the great fire of 1788, the chapel was quickly rebuilt by the White Penitents. Confiscated by the State, it was bought back by a penitent in 1800 and is now a listed historic monument. You can admire a magnificent altarpiece attributed to Pierre Vaneau, from the Sainte-Marie convent in Le Puy. Today, the Haute-Loire region boasts just four penitent brotherhoods: Sainte-Sigolène, Tence, Le Puy-en-Velay and Saugues, with a total membership of around forty.
