Excellent starting point for visiting the Mont-des-Arts: Royal Museums of Fine Arts, Musical Instruments Museum, BELvue Museum. The famous burnt-down Coudenberg Palace stood on this square until it was destroyed. Initially, the statue of the governor-builder, Charles de Lorraine, stood in the center of the square. But the statue was destroyed during the French Revolution, and was succeeded in 1848 by Godefroy de Bouillon - on his way to the First Crusade - at a time when young Belgium was searching for patriotic landmarks.
