Huge workshop resulting from a contract with the Belgian State, exhibiting the masterpieces of Antoine Wiertz
The Musée Wiertz is the former home and studio of artist and man of letters Antoine Wiertz (1808-1865). A controversial figure of the Romantic movement, he returned from his trip to Italy fascinated by mythological subjects. This immense studio (as well as his paintings) is the result of a deal with the Belgian state. In exchange for financing the construction of this studio, the painter agreed to bequeath his work to the State. It became a museum on his death. His masterpiece, exhibited in the museum, is La Belle Rosine, in which a nude young woman gazes in fascination at a skeleton.
