Larger than St. Peter's in Rome, it dominates Brussels with its austere mass and remains the largest courthouse in the world.

Larger than St. Peter's in Rome, it dominates Brussels with its austere mass. Its long construction period (1866-1883) meant that its creator, Joseph Poelaert, who died in 1879, never saw it completed. From the outset, the Palais was nicknamed the "Mammoth", for obvious reasons. At the time, it was the largest civil building in the world, and remains the largest courthouse on the planet: its surface area is 52,464 m², with a built-up area of 26,000 m². Its (overly) lengthy renovation had been unfinished since the 1990s, but will be completed in 2030.
