Welcome to the Belgian Comic Strip Center !
A veritable temple to the comic strip, the CBBD is also an undisputed masterpiece of Art Nouveau.
The marriage of 9th Art and Art Nouveau
Located in the heart of Brussels, in a majestic Art Nouveau building designed by Victor Horta in 1906, the Belgian Comic Strip Center opened its doors to the public on October 6, 1989. In just a few years, this grand museum has become one of Brussels' main attractions. Every year, over 200,000 visitors choose to explore the permanent and temporary exhibitions on its 4,200 m² of floor space.
Located in one of Brussels' oldest districts, a stone's throw from the Ilot Sacré, the Grand-Place and the Quartier Royal, the Belgian Comic Strip Center attracts a growing number of visitors every year, who come to enjoy the architectural splendor of the site and the communicative pleasures of comic strips.
The Belgian Comic Strip Centre brings together everything to do with European comic strips, from their prestigious origins to the most recent developments.
While temporary and permanent exhibitions help to make this temple a lively, dynamic and attractive place, this tool for the promotion of comics (associated with the creation of the Brussels Comics Trail, the annual issue of comics stamps, etc.), cultural ambassador for Belgium, its regions and communities, and renowned reference tool on the comics planet, is also a documentation center unique in the world. The CBBD also produces conferences, books and creative workshops for numerous partners, and acts as their advisor.
The CBBD's mission
The non-profit organization "Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée" was founded in 1984. It is a private non-profit organization with both French- and Dutch-speaking members. Half of its members come from the world of comics and the professional associations of comics authors. The association's presidents have been Bob De Moor (1984-1992), Jean Van Hamme (1992-2000), Guy Dessicy (2000-2012), Ferry Van Vosselen (2012-2022) and today Pieter de Poortere. The association's objectives are twofold: to preserve and promote the art of comics, and to safeguard and enhance the architectural masterpiece that houses it.
The Kingdom of Comics
From classic comics to graphic novels, over 700 comic strip artists make Belgium the country with the highest density of artists per square kilometer! Like nowhere else, this popular form of expression has become an authentic art form. Like nowhere else, comics are part of people's reality and imagination.
To enter the Belgian Comic Strip Center is to share in the extraordinary marriage of the Ninth Art and Art Nouveau, two modes of artistic expression for which Brussels was the cradle of world renown.
In addition to the permanent spaces, temporary exhibitions await you.
