Capital of the department of Tumbes, the city of the Tumpis, pre-Hispanic people, is the most northern of Peru, Lima being at 1 270 km. The city is almost on the border with Ecuador: the border post is in Aguas Verdes, 20 km to the north. The temperature is semi-tropical (19 to 38 °C) and the climate dry. Tumbes is not very interesting, but its beaches, licked by the warm El Niño current, are with those of Piura the most beautiful of the country. The beach of Zorritos, a little further south, is lined with hotels for a few days with your feet in the sand. We will stay little in the city of Tumbes, except if we must go to Ecuador by road.
