Located at 3,303 meters above sea level, Huancayo is a large commercial and modern city, rather noisy and active, not necessarily very endearing at first glance. Nevertheless, with the sun of the sierra high in the sky and its protective apu , the Huaytapallana is in sight, it keeps a distinctly Andean identity. The capital of the department of Junín is the2nd most important city of the sierra after Cusco. Enclosed between the mountains, it closes the valley of the river Mantaro , whose floods, in winter, are tragic for the villages which border it. The temperature oscillates, the day and during all the year, between -5 °C (early the morning) and 21 °C. The city, very commercial, knows an activity which never fails, and its markets attract the inhabitants of the nearby valleys and even of Lima, distant of 300 km. The surrounding area is very agricultural and, as soon as you leave the city, you find the fields, the green and the smell of the eucalyptus.
