Situated on the Mesaoria plain, slightly set back from the bay of Famagusta, this relatively untouristy village is nevertheless a Mecca of Cypriot culture. It is home to one of the island's most remarkable medieval churches. The church is unique in that it has one nave for the Orthodox and the other for the Catholics. Trikomo was also the birthplace of EOKA independence movement leader Georgios Grivas (1898-1974) and the great archaeologist Vassos Karageorghis (1929-2021), renowned for his research into the sites of Paphos, Salamis and Kition. Once inhabited by Greek Cypriots, Trikomo was repopulated after the 1974 invasion mainly by Turkish Cypriots from the İskele district (Skala/Σκάλα), in Larnaka. It has since been officially named Yeni İskele ("new İskele"). The village is also home to one of Cyprus's oldest festivals, the Geleneksel İskele Festivali. Held at the end of June-beginning of July and devoted to folk dances, this was first held in Larnaka in 1968.
