Nearly 190 km from San Francisco, Gualala - pronounced "walala" - is a pleasant little municipality that provides a stopover between Marin County and the town of Mendocino. It takes its lilting name from the river to the south - which has acted as a natural border since 1859 - named by the Pomos Amerindians. A little further north, the village of Anchor Bay offers a bucolic stopover.
