Built on the coast during the Gold Rush, Oamaru was supposed to play an important port role for the South Island but its development was not what was expected. However, it knew a period of prosperity thanks to the exploitation of limestone quarries. The white stone found on many storefronts is of excellent quality and was used to build the most beautiful buildings in the center, especially on Thames Street and Tyne Street. Nowadays, people go there to admire the pygmy penguins that have taken up residence in the area. If you are lucky, you can see the rare antipodean penguins at Bushy Beach.
