VANISHED WORLD

The Otago province is rich in geological prehistory. Sixty-five million years ago it was covered by the sea and when it receded fifty-five million years later, erosion removed the youngest fossils (less than eighteen million years old). Scientists and enthusiasts created the Vanished World in the early 2000s and allow visitors to see some of their discoveries. The center offers interesting exhibits of whale, dolphin and invertebrate fossils from 20 km away.
