Otago is rich in geological prehistory. Sixty-five million years ago, it was covered by the sea, and when it retreated fifty-five million years later, erosion removed the youngest fossils (less than eighteen million years old). Scientists and enthusiasts set up the Vanished World Centre in the early 2000s to showcase some of their discoveries. The center features interesting exhibits of whale, dolphin and invertebrate fossils from around 20 km away.
