The centre of the small town of Oamaru is simply magnificent (and you can do everything on foot). There are many historic buildings that are worth the detour (for example the town clock or anz bank). The i-site will be pleased to offer you a brochure with list all buildings to see and their history. On the way to the penguin colony, fork by the street parallel to the main avenue (which is Thames Street) and you will find a ton of art galleries where it is good to get lost!
