Situated at the confluence of the Ongarue and Whanganui rivers (once major māori transport routes linking the Whanganui, Waikato and Taupō regions), Taumarunui was an important crossroads village. It is part of the Ruapehu district, and of the King Country region, cradle of the Kingitanga movement. The first European settled here in 1874, marrying a Māori woman and establishing a trading post at the junction of the rivers. It is now one of the main entry points to Whanganui National Park, and a perfect base for mountain biking on the famous Timber Trail, as well as kayaking on the Whanganui Journey, one of the 11 Great Walks.
