Beware of the misleading term "village"! There are no dwellings or shops here, just an information center, a toilet block and parking lot, and a few lodgings, a little out of the way. From here, you can explore the hiking trails (or ski slopes) on this side of the national park. Shuttles also leave from the village for the Tongariro Crossing. No public transport is available to Whakapapa, so you'll need a car or make your own arrangements with your accommodation. A visit to the Visitor Centre is essential to check that you are dressed and equipped for the forecasted weather conditions.
