Hāwera is the second largest town in the Taranaki region and is primarily agricultural and dairy. It is one of the end points of Surf Highway 45.Hāwera is a Māori word meaning burnt place. This refers to the sad culmination of conflicts between two local hapu (sub-tribes) during which the dormitory building of the attacked hapu was burned down.Unfortunately, the town is aptly named because it suffered three major fires in 1884, 1888 and 1912, which led the municipality to decide to build a water tower, now one of Taranaki's landmarks
