This small village, located at the intersection of State Highway 49 and State Highway 1 (27 km south of Ohakune), is the entry point to the Desert Road, often closed in winter due to snow or ice. Waiouru was originally a military camp and is still (and has been since the Second World War) the largest military base on the North Island. Its main attraction is the Army Museum, with its impressive collection of tanks, cannons and firearms. Waiouru also boasts New Zealand's highest railway station, perched at 813 m. In Māori, Waioru means "The River of the West".
