130 km from Tauranga (1h30 drive), Opotiki is the last town in the Bay of Plenty before the vast expanse of the East Cape. Here, you can enjoy beautiful beaches, a mild climate and a lush hinterland. The Maoris occupied the area shortly after their arrival on Aotearoa. Its full name was Ōpōtiki-Mai-Tawhiti. In 1840, it was the turn of the first European settlers, missionaries, then came whalers and merchants. From Opotiki, on a clear day, you can still see the infamous Whakaari (White Island) in the distance...I-SITE open from 9am to 4.30pm, 70 Bridge Street (✆ +64 7 315 3031).
