Populated for more than 700 years, the city of Gisborne made New Zealand history first and foremost by being Captain Cook's landing point on October 9, 1769 at Kaiti Beach. An important port in Poverty Bay, it is one of the country's most isolated major cities and the first to see the sun every morning. Its generous climate allows it to engage in significant agricultural and wine-growing activities, and its hinterland is sublime in nature, with Te Urewera National Park to the west and the East Cape Road to the north.
