Ignalina is not included in the Aukštaitija National Park, although it is only 3 km away. Traces of settlements dating from the 9th to 12th centuries have been found. But it was in 1810 that the town was first mentioned. The name Ignalina is said to derive from the name of a certain Ignas Tyzenhauzas, who bought four villages and built a manor house. The town was built in 1862 with the construction of the railroad line linking Warsaw to St. Petersburg. From here, you can explore the region, surrounded by lakes and beaches - the most popular being on Lake Gavys. Winter sports fans? Head for the Winter Sports Center.
