The town of Kėdainiai was first mentioned in 1372. Motherland of the Radvila family, it is often presented as a Protestant town and has shown great tolerance towards religious minorities throughout its history. Catholics, Orthodox and Jews lived side by side. Today, this can be seen in the city's architecture, which is a beautifully preserved example of a provincial Lithuanian town. Kėdainiai is home to the Cucumber Festival in July, and is thus nicknamed the "Cucumber Queen". On the practical side, the tourist office offers a wealth of information in English and French.
