Jefferson Island, like Avery Island, is one of the five salt domes of Louisiana. The place was first inhabited by the Atakapa Indians, and the famous pirate Jean Lafitte stayed there. One of the main reasons to visit the Rip Van Winkle Gardens, beautiful gardens surrounding the Jefferson House. The gardens are located next to Lake Peigneur, where tulips, hibiscus, daffodils, impatiens, camellias, azaleas, and roses bloom abundantly, framed by century-old oaks. These gardens are an ideal setting for observing the region's birdlife. The site also houses a Bed & Breakfast with two cottages and the lovely Jefferson Café.
