This city played a major role in the Expedition of the Thousand. It is from its castle that Garibaldi, 4 days after his landing on the island, proclaimed himself dictator of Sicily in the name of Vittorio Emanuele. Its patron saint is Nicholas of Myra, celebrated on December 6th. The castle dates from the 13th century, built under the authority of Frederick II, so it is medieval. The numerous churches of the city suffered a lot from the earthquake of 1968; most of the works of art that were there are in the museum. Don't miss the Basilica of San Miceli, a fine example of Byzantine religious construction, quite rare in Sicily
