Rockaway Beach, a favorite of surfers, home to surf stores, bars and large white wooden houses.

Less crowded and cleaner than Brooklyn's Coney Island, Rockaway beach is also a favorite spot for surfers. With its surf stores, beach bars and big white wooden houses, it has the feel of a seaside town, minus the tourists. Good news! The good news is that you can get there cheaply from Manhattan, by subway (lines A then S) or by ferry with NYCFerry. Rockaway Beach is nicknamed the "Irish Riviera" because of its large Irish-American population.
