Large naval and air museum on the Hudson River with a 250 m long aircraft carrier from 1943
One of the world's largest aviation museums, located on the banks of the Hudson River, is well worth a visit. To fully appreciate it, it's best to visit in good weather, as much of what there is to see is outdoors. First of all, we visit theUSS Intrepid, an aircraft carrier that served in the Second World War and the Vietnam War, and was later used by NASA to recover space capsules. Converted into a museum in 1982, this 1943 aircraft carrier is 250 m long. Inside, an immense 5-metre-high hangar showcases the history of the 20th century and the evolution of technology, illustrated by models, crew outfits, vehicles and interactive screens. Also on display is the F-14 Tomcat, the Navy's largest dart-shaped aircraft capable of reaching twice the speed of sound (Tom Cruise's plane in Top Gun). The nuclear submarine USS Growler, a missile launcher, can be seen on the other side of the jetty (claustrophobics beware!). Discovering the living conditions of the men on board is fascinating. Young and old who dream of space will also get their money's worth with the discovery (for an additional fee) of the first American space shuttle, Enterprise, the origin of NASA's Space Shuttle program. The shuttle was used for atmospheric tests in 1977, but was never put into orbit.
