70 PINE STREET
Building of 290 m in the very Art Deco style with luxury apartments with terrace, the most expensive in Manhattan
Formerly known as the American International Building, this 290-metre skyscraper dates back to 1932, when the city was engaged in a race for the tallest tower. In an Art Deco style reminiscent of the Empire State Building, except for its Gothic-style top floors, the building has now been surpassed by many of New York's newer towers. In the past, the building attracted tourists for its double-decker elevators and its now-closed observatory on the 66th floor, which is open to the public. Since 2015, it has housed luxury apartments, having long been occupied by an insurance company. Prices vary widely, from US$3,400 for a studio on floors 6 to 10, to up to US$20,000 for the highest floors. The large apartments on the very top floors are among the most expensive rentals in the city. From the 55th floor upwards, where five-bedroom penthouses with private terraces can be rented, prices climb considerably. Happy apartment renters can take advantage of the renovations that took place in 2015, which now give them private access to a bowling alley, supermarket, billiard room and children's playroom. The Saga restaurant, on the 63rd floor, opened in August 2021 and was soon awarded two Michelin stars. If you can't make it up to the upper floors, you can still enter the lobby, which houses a coffee shop.
