Popular red lighthouse for navigation in Fort Washington Park offering a free ride
Located in Fort Washington Park, this lighthouse stands on rocks on the Hudson River, under the George Washington Bridge. Today, it is possible to climb to the top of the lighthouse free of charge on special days and events. The Coast Guard installed the building here in 1921 to secure navigation on the then-busy river. Today, the lighthouse is the last in Manhattan. It remained in operation until 1948, although the construction of the bridge reduced its usefulness by 1931.
