9/11 MEMORIAL
Large area dedicated to the victims of the attacks with 2 large pools offering free access at any time of day
The new World Trade Center towers frame the 9/11 Memorial, a large space dedicated to the victims of the attacks. It is the central element of the site. Opened on September 11, 2011, 10 years after the collapse of the twin towers, the Memorial consists of two large pools with interior waterfalls (North Pool and South Pool) where the names of all the victims of the 2001 attacks, as well as those of 1993, are engraved forever on the parapets of these two square bases, above the museum that pays tribute to them. There are around three thousand of them. It's not uncommon to see loved ones gathered in front of an inscription. Occasionally, you'll find that a white rose has been slipped into the engraving of a name, as a way of paying tribute to the victims on their anniversary. The perpetual movement of water falling into the basin, then rising again, represents not only the fall of the Twin Towers, but also the cycle of life and permanent renewal. We don't forget, but we continue to live. These two basins are located exactly where the two towers of the World Trade Center once stood. Today, the memorial is open to the public and can be visited free of charge at any time of day. Every September 11, an official ceremony is held in tribute to the victims, attended at least once by every American president. Despite the tragic events that took place here, the atmosphere is quite soothing. A magnificent place for meditation.
