This West Village institution may have become (very) touristy, but the faithful still come to sing around its piano. It was once the home of Thomas Paine, one of the founding fathers of the United States, a pleasure house, a boy bar (a gay bar in the 1890s) and the piano bar it is today. People come here to sing along to Broadway songs. Go during the week for a more local feel. Admission is free, but you have to buy two drinks per person (fortunately, it's not very expensive).
