The New York Philharmonic is the oldest American orchestra (founded in 1842) and one of the oldest and most famous in the world. Conductors have included Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, Arturo Toscanini, Dimitri Mitropoulos and Zubin Mehta... The orchestra plays 36 weeks a year (a world record) and gives free concerts in Central Park and New York's main parks, to hundreds of thousands of listeners. Opened in 1961, David Geffen Hall is the orchestra's permanent home. It has 2,200 seats and underwent a $550 million renovation in 2022.
