Gunung Mulu National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Unique both for its biodiversity and its karst formations, scientific expeditions follow one another here. Botanists come to study the 17 vegetation zones that encompass 3,500 plant species, including the world's largest variety of palm trees, with 109 species. Spelunkers traverse the 295 km of underground galleries to map and uncover new chambers and caves. Naturalists track 67 species of mammals, 262 birds, 281 butterflies and 458 species of ants. The caves are of extraordinary dimensions, such as the Sarawak Hall, which measures 600 m by 415 m and is 80 m high. It is the largest known underground chamber in the world. Hardy hikers can climb the Pinnacles, an exceptional karst formation of sharp peaks jutting above the canopy. This is a must-see park for nature lovers. However, good organization is essential. If you want to visit the park on your own without using an agency, it can be very expensive unless you manage to get together with other travellers.
