Bario is a community of several villages in the heart of Sarawak, on the border with Kalimantan. Situated at an altitude of 1,000 meters, Bario is fairly isolated, with no paved roads linking this regional "capital" to the rest of the state, but it is of course possible to reach the town by air from Miri or Marudi. This is the main gateway to the superb Kelabit Highlands region, inhabited by the Kelabit people. It's a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts, with a well-developed eco-tourism sector where many villagers have converted their traditional houses into guesthouses.
