THE TWENTY-CORNERED TOWER
One of the first stone-built keeps with machicolations, this tower will captivate history buffs.
The Tour aux vingt angles is the name given to the imposing keep of the Château des Mercoeur, due to its incredible structure. A square building reinforced by two buttresses, this keep embodies the memory of the castle of which it was a part: a veritable fortress spanning some 4,800m2. Synonymous with the past domination of the Mercoeur lords over the region, it was razed to the ground by the Chavagnacs in the 18th century. Only the keep was spared. Its preservation is a stroke of luck for history buffs, as it is one of the earliest stone keeps built with arched machicolations resting on corbels.
