The island of Gorée boasts one of Senegal's oldest mosques, built in 1890 from local basalt stone at the foot of the Castel's western slope. Nestled in the heart of the island, it's a charming little mosque, dressed in white and topped by a minaret facing the ocean. Only Muslims are allowed inside the mosque. A slightly more modern feature is a fake palm tree that hides the building's loudspeakers! To counter the erosion threatening the mosque, a protective dike has been built.
