Cocoa plantation for an exciting and relaxing walk in Uxmal
Opposite the archeological site, in the heart of a lush forest housing a 2-hectare cocoa plantation, is a fascinating walk. Discover 6 rooms retracing the history of cocoa, its uses in Mexico and around the world, and take part in discovery and tasting workshops. You can also attend a traditional Mayan ceremony or take part in a workshop to make your own chocolate. Finally, the museum's eco-park is home to a refuge for the region's wild animals. Located in Uxmal, the Choco-Story museum welcomes you to an authentic and historic setting, a former hacienda. You'll discover the history of cocoa, from its origins in the north-western Amazon basin to its arrival in Europe, where chocolate was born. You'll also learn about the cultural and economic importance of this raw material to the Olmec and Mayan peoples. A visit here will give you a deeper understanding of cocoa growing techniques, varieties and preparation processes. What's more, this museum, with its six exhibition rooms, features a traditional Mayan house where you can discover how a middle-class Mayan family lived. Beautiful selections of clothing and utensils are also on display. The site also features a tasting room where you can enjoy chokoj ha, a traditional beverage made from roasted and ground cocoa beans, spiced up with herbs and spices. During a visit to Choco-Story, you can also witness a traditional Mayan ceremony. Take a stroll through the museum's botanical garden and visit the endemic animal sanctuary.
