In order to control construction and preserve Désirade's natural heritage, the French government has created a second national reserve in the northeast of the island, after the islet of Petite-Terre, which is administratively part of Désirade. One of the determining factors in the creation of this protected area was the island's unique geology. A dry climate vegetation, where Caribbean trees are well adapted, such as the mancenillium with its toxic leaves and fruits (which cause burns), the seaside grape tree, the olive tree, the cinnamon wood or the cashew tree. The cactus family is well represented, notably with the famous "Tête à l'Anglais".
