THE BIG MILE
The 600-year-old Gros Mélèze, planted at an altitude of 1730m, measures 6.40 m in circumference and is 30 m high at Montricher-Albanne.
Europe's largest larch is here, in the "mélézia" forest at 1,740 m altitude. It is one of the oldest trees in France. Some 500 to 600 years old, 30 m high and 6.40 m wide in circumference, it impresses with its longevity and presence. A signposted 3 km trail, accessible from Albanne, takes 2 hours round trip to reach this veritable Alpine sentinel. At the foot of the tree, time stands still: the peacefulness of the surroundings, the wind blowing through the golden needles and the view over the valleys make for a moving and grandiose stroll.
