La Fourmilière, a cooperative teeming with good ideas, offers over 2,600 items focusing on organic and local food, hygiene and cleaning products, many of them in bulk. The 800-plus members are mostly residents of Saint-Étienne and the surrounding area, who take it in turns to stock the shelves, keep the place alive and run it. To shop there, you also have to join and give 3 hours a month of your time. It's a way of taking control of your consumption and reducing the cost of your monthly shopping bill.
