The Saugey meander is part of the Haut-Rhône national nature reserve.
In this section of the Rhone, the climatic cooling caused by the Little Ice Age led to a change in river dynamics. The Saugey meander was short-circuited around 1690 and a system of lônes and islands was established in the course of the Rhône. The Saugey meander is part of the Haut-Rhône National Nature Reserve and is home to wetlands. Conservation and management of the flood meadows are the main objectives of the site.
