HOLY MARY ABBEY
Guided tour in a Romanesque abbey church in Cruas, one of the most remarkable historical monuments of the department.
As we discover its hidden treasures, we take time to explore the building and walk in the footsteps of a medieval monastic community. The Benedictine abbey of Sainte-Marie is said to have been founded in 804. The cloister and part of the monastic buildings were destroyed during the Wars of Religion, leaving only the abbey church. This Romanesque monument is listed as a historic monument and is one of the most remarkable in the département. During excavations in 1972, archaeologists unearthed the foundations of a Gallo-Roman villa. Between 1972 and 1999, a series of archaeological digs led to the redevelopment of the building's forecourt and chevet, and the uncovering of the necropolis. Among the treasures unearthed were a12th-century monastic tribune and 13 capitals. Other highlights include a magnificent bestiary in the crypt, remains of frescoes and a 12th-century mosaic. Since 2021, a new attraction has been on offer: a journey through time for the whole family. Thanks to the "Les enquêtes de Anne Mésia" app (Anne Mésia's tour of the Abbatiale Sainte-Marie de Cruas - available in French and English), explore the site in search of architectural treasures using augmented reality. You'll need to use your intuition and observation skills to solve the riddles in your path! Children will love discovering the abbey church.
