PARCOURS MÉMORIEL DES EXILÉS
Go there and contact
A memorial trail for those exiled from Nazism, nearly 8 km long, honours the writers and artists who found refuge here
From the early 1930s onwards, the seaside town of Sanary was a haven for artists and intellectuals. Fleeing Nazism, many famous personalities found a haven of peace here before fleeing to the United States once German troops arrived in the southern part of the country. These included Bertolt Brecht, Thomas Mann and his family, Erich Maria Remarque and Stefan Zweig. The Hotel de la Tour on the port served as a stopping-off point for some.
