This charming little port was already populated in Roman times, and it was from the 11th century, when the church of Saint-Nazaire was first built - on the port - that it began to be populated. In the 14th century, the construction of a watchtower favored the birth of a first urban core. In the 17th century, Saint-Nazaire freed itself from the municipality of Ollioules, to which it had been attached until then, and carried out important work to deepen the port to allow access for the royal galleys. In 1890, San Nazari, the Provençal name for Saint-Nazaire, obtained a change of name to distinguish it from the nine other communes bearing this name, and became Sanary. The village will live over time thanks to its agricultural activities, vineyards and olive trees, commercial and maritime. It was not until the construction of the railroad during the Second Empire that it began to develop as a tourist destination, initially in winter, before the craze for sea bathing in the 1930s.Today, alongside tourism, fishing is still present with the famous "pointus", small pot-bellied boats that have become the symbol of artisanal fishing in the South of France. Pleasant in all seasons, the port of Sanary offers a natural shelter well protected from the mistral. In 2018, its picturesque market, located on the boulevard d'Estienne d'Orves, was crowned "most beautiful market in France" in a national competition launched by Jean-Pierre Pernaut on the 1pm news on TF1.
