THE BATTERY OF PEYRAS
Located 200 m above sea level in the foothills of the Sicié cape, the Peyras battery will let you discover a 360 °panorama: from the Bandol harbour to that of Giens and the Hyères Islands, through the peninsula of Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer. You can also see the Toulon Mountains including Mount Caume (highest point at 804 m). The battery is still occupied by the Navy which undertook restoration work since 1997. Built in 1878-1879, a period marked by Anglo-French and Franco-Italian tensions in the Mediterranean, she had as mission to conquer the area between the Sablettes isthmus and the open sea around the Deux Frere rocks. Its lights crossed those of its sister Saint-Elmo battery on the left. It was a battery of bombing calibre that submitted enemy ships to a dipping shot, thus increasing its effectiveness. After liberation, the Navy transformed it into the Defense Against Aviation school by installing the four German 105mm guns that are still there today. The battery ceased to be operational on 1 June 1957.
