Discover Fort Saint-Jean, a historic jewel offering exceptional panoramic views and an intricate interior for a captivating visit.

Located at the mouth of the Old Port, Fort Saint-Jean, a historic building of the first order, is worth a visit for the exceptional panorama it offers over the city, as well as for its complex interior, a witness to centuries of human reflection aimed at protecting Marseille and its port. The fort has been rehabilitated since 2013 and integrated into the MuCEM complex to which it is connected by an imposing footbridge. Previously, it was not accessible, damaged during the Second World War, when the occupying forces decided to use it as a munitions depot. You can visit its garden part for free, where many plants from around the Mediterranean are well presented, and various courtyards and terraces where the people of Marseille like to stroll and bask in the sun for long hours. The benches and chairs here and there are an invitation to do so. The fort as you see it was built in the 14th century by King René to protect the city from maritime attacks. We recommend that you climb the tower of the same King René to get one of the best views of the Old Port and the city. Take the time to explore all the passages, the small courtyards to really take the measure of this precious monument. Many concerts and festivals take place there in the summertime, in a setting, you will see it yourself, enchanting. One last piece of advice, take a walk at the foot of the fort, all along the path below. It offers beautiful views of the Mucem, the Pharo and the entrance to the port.

Absolutely stunning views. I had a great time walking around here. The cafe was also delicious and had lots of water. The gardens around the grounds were thoughtful with lots of places to sit. It was free to walk around.

Amazing view. You can see the whole port and the Mediterranean sea. Very clean place. Lots of paths for walking. Entrance is free, so you can enjoy the location even just for a walk or to relax on a bench. There is one cafeteria inside the fort next to the exhibition building. The fort is connected with the Mediterranean museum by a bridge with amazing view. With the price of one ticket you can visit all the exhibitions. The cathedral across the street is also visible. One of the best locations in the city.

Très impressionnant, jolie vue sur la mer et la ville, assez dépaysant par rapport à la ville

They say they are opened until 8 pm on Sunday. I was there at 6:30. Your website says you need to arrive 45 minutes before you close. Might want to change that on your website. Don’t waste your time.

Visite de toute beauté, le tour de ronde et l’accès au Mucem par la passerelle est un must. Le tout est totalement gratuit, seul l’accès au musée et aux expositions est payant.
