Located east of the Old Port, the 1st arrondissement of Marseille is the beating heart of the city! It is among most famous ones because it has many key sites of the Phocaean city such as the Porte d'Aix, the Vieux Port or the Saint Charles station. Crossed from east to west by the Canebière, it made upof six districts: Belsunce, le Chapitre, Noailles, l'Opéra, Saint-Charles and Thiers. The 1st arrondissement is particularly rich in cultural sites such as the Théâtre du Gymnase, the Opera, the Palais des arts and the history museum. This part of the city has also many buildings built in the 17th century, a period of urbanization in Marseille, of which the Saint-Théodore church, the Pesciolini hotel and the Figaro house are good examples. The 1st arrondissement of Marseille is also structured around several shopping streets such as Rue de la République or Rue Paradis. Finally, for a drink or a good bouillabaisse, the cafés and restaurants of the Old Port are typical and much appreciated by tourists for their warm atmosphere.

What to visit Marseille?

When to go to Marseille?

The best time to go to Marseille is in the spring or fall, during the low season. Hotel and restaurant rates are much lower than in summer during this period and the beaches are almost deserted. As for the climate, it is ideal, warm but not too hot, and you can often swim from spring and sometimes until the end of November in autumn. Winter is the very low tourist season but the climate remains mild with the possibility of doing many hikes under the sun. The high tourist season is of course the summer, in July and August, the roads are crowded and the prices easily go from simple to triple. It is then necessary to book early if you want to have a place and not to lose all your savings. Marseille is indeed a city that is becoming more and more touristic and it is not only popular with the French but also with a great number of foreign tourists. If you go to Marseille in the summer, it is a good time for outdoor festivals and you can easily find a complete list of these festivals at the tourist office.
