MAUSOLÉE ROMAIN DE LA PENNELLE
A pyramid-shaped stone structure rises from the village heights, a monument to be seen alongside the remains of a Roman mausoleum
An astonishing monument, this pyramid-shaped stone structure rises up from the heights of the village of La Penne-sur-Huveaune, just a stone's throw from the houses. La Pennelle, or Pennelus, gave its name to the commune and is the remains of a 2000-year-old Roman mausoleum. Questions remain, but excavations have proven the funerary use of the monument, once topped by a pyramidon. 8 metres high, it was listed as a French monument in 1886.
